What does pool salt do in a saltwater pool?
Pool salt is essential for saltwater chlorinators. Once added to the water, it passes through a chlorinator cell and is converted into chlorine. This keeps the water clean and sanitised without traditional chlorine tablets or liquids. It’s a gentler system with fewer harsh chemical smells and softer water feel.
How Much Pool Salt Do I Need to Add?
It depends on the size of your pool and its current salt level. Most saltwater pools need around 4,000–5,000 parts per million (ppm) of salt. A standard 50,000L pool typically requires 200–250kg of salt when starting from scratch. Top-ups require less and depend on water loss from splashing, backwashing, or rain.
Can I Use Any Type of Salt in My Pool?
No—only use salt that’s specifically designed for pool use. Pool salt is refined and free of additives that can stain surfaces, clog filters, or throw off your pool’s chemistry. Table salt, rock salt, or agricultural salt aren’t suitable for swimming pools and can damage your chlorinator system.
